New Glaze Policy – April 17, 2026
Our new glaze policy will go into effect on May 15 You can read the full policy in the Studio Handbook, especially the sections about Kiln Cookies on page 17 and Glaze Run Fines on page 20.
First and foremost, we want to preserve a space in which makers can freely explore glazes and glazing techniques.
We also need to avoid the labor and expense of: grinding glaze runs off kiln shelves; replacing kiln shelves after repeated grinding has damaged them; and putting a studio-made cookie under every piece we fire.
In order to achieve both things, we’ve developed a new glaze run policy that empowers makers.
In short, the new policies are:
Glaze Fines
$0: If a member-supplied cookie catches a glaze run.
$5: Per glaze run onto a studio cookie and/or a kiln shelf.
$10: Per glaze run after $25 worth of $5 fines.
$25: Per glaze run after $50 worth of $10 fines.
Cookies
Work that uses untested non-studio glazes may be moved to the re-do shelf with a request for a member-supplied cookie.
Irregularly shape work should include a member-supplied cookie.
If you’d like to make your own cookies check out this video or this video.
Here’s the great news: if you don’t have the time or hate making cookies, you can purchase them in the Mill Pond Shop.
