Make Terra Sigillata with Julie Cunningham

from $45.00

DATE: Tuesday, July 21, 2026
TIME: 6pm–8pm
INSTRUCTOR: Julie Cunningham
EXPERIENCE LEVEL: None required

This workshop is for anyone who is working with clay, handbuilt or wheelthrown, that wants to explore different surface treatments. Terra sigilata is Ideal for alternative firing like Raku and pit-firing.

Terra sigillata (Latin for "sealed earth") is an ultra-refined clay slip used in ceramics. Applied to unfired pottery, it settles into a microscopically thin, smooth layer that, when polished or burnished, creates a beautiful, natural, satin-to-high gloss shine without the use of standard glazes. The ancient Greeks and Romans used this technique in lieu of glaze.

This workshop will include:

  • Demo making a larger batch of Terra sig

  • Students will then each make their own Terra sig if they are using non-studio clay

  • Review instructor’s samples

  • Demonstration of applying Terra sig to pots and burnishing

  • Demonstrate making colored Terra sigs

  • Show fired samples

  • Review of recipes

BRING:

  • Clear plastic containers (recommended 1 quart size)

  • Pulverized dry or powdered dry clay if you’re using your own non-studio clay (probably about 3 lbs.)

  • Bucket (studio buckets are ok for workshop but bring your own if you want to keep it longer)

Mill Pond will supply deflocculant and Laguna #65 powdered clay for a large demo batch that can be divvied up at end of workshop and siphoned the next day by each attendee.
